The Porifera-collection contains ca. 22,000 registered samples, of which 390 nominal types). There is a continuous growth of the number of specimens by active collecting. Large nuclei of the collection are sponges from Indonesia (Siboga collection, Snellius II collection), West Indies (Van der Horst-, Wagenaar-Hummelinck-, Stock. c.s.- and Van Soest-collections), West Africa (CANCAP- and Mauritania-collections), and Seychelles (NIOP-collection). The collection is also increasingly becoming important as a facility for keeping "vouchers" of chemical research, triggered by the strong increase in the search for bioactive substances of sponges. There is a large collection of microscopic slides (42,000).
