The basis of the mollusc collection of the Zoological Museum Amsterdam (ZMA) originates from the collection of the Royal Zoological Society 'Natura Artis Magistra' [Artis Zoo], which was founded in 1838. The dry stored collection of molluscs from The Netherlands in the Museum consists of Recent and fossil specimens. The fossil samples are mainly from the beaches (Eemien and Pliocene) and inland borings (Miocene). Up to 70% of the collection is currently digitized. The following molluscan ‘Classes’ are represented: Polyplacophora (111 samples), Gastropoda (18467 samples), Cephalopoda (110 samples) and Bivalvia (990 samples). [date: 18.Feb. 2010]
