A key element in implementing these Directives is the establishment of the NATURA 2000 network to protect certain species and habitats of EU importance (Articles 3 and 4 of the Habitats Directive and Article 4 of the Birds Directive.\nUnder the Birds Directive, they must designate the core breeding, resting and wintering sites for 190 rare or threatened bird species listed in Annex I of the Directive, as well as for certain other migratory bird species. Under the Habitats Directive, countries must designate sites for over 1000 plant and animal species and 233 habitats. These are listed in Annexes I and II of the Directive respectively.\nThe proposed Project aims to implement steps 3 and 4 and to lay the groundwork for steps 5 and 6.\nThe creation of a dataset for the NATURA 2000 network requires the involvement of hundreds of experts (zoologists and botanists), as well as other stakeholders (local authorities, land users, and state authorities). This work must be carried out for each individual species according to EU methodology. The institutional capacity of state authorities does not enable them to perform this task independently. Therefore, we propose establishing an expert environment to prepare the dataset for the NATURA 2000 network and developing a clear system of interaction and engagement with key stakeholders, primarily state authorities responsible for preparing Ukraine for EU accession in terms of implementing the EU Habitats and Birds Directives' requirements.\nThe implementation of the proposed project will have an impact on the fulfillment of national and international commitments, including the following:\nThe Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union of 16 September 2014, in the section “Nature Protection” (Annex XXX to Chapter 6 “Environment”), provides for the implementation of the provisions of the Habitats and Birds Directives.\nBy Resolution No. 225/3 of 22 January 2025, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management approved the recommendations of the hearings on the topic “Legal framework for the functioning of an effective system of protected areas and sites as a basis for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity: current issues.” These recommendations stipulate the need to ensure the preparation and development of legislative amendments aimed at the full transposition of the provisions of the Habitats and Birds Directives, particularly regarding the establishment of conservation regimes for flora and fauna species listed in the annexes to these directives.\nAccording to paragraph 294 of the Government’s Priority Action Plan for 2025, it is envisaged to ensure the preparation of sectoral positions regarding the adaptation of legislation in areas of responsibility, including the field of environmental protection, as well as other international obligations of Ukraine in this area.\nThe primary stakeholders in the implementation of the Project are the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada (Prliament) of Ukraine on Ukraine’s Integration into the European Union and the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine (letters of support from these institutions are attached to the project proposal), as well as the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Environmental Policy and Nature Management. Abstract
Herpotrichiellaceae is a well-defined family within Chaetothyriales and exhibits broadly paraphyletic and polyphyletic relationships in current phylogenetic analyses. In present study, an undescribed fungus was collected from a dead branch of a terrestrial dicotyledonous plant in Sichuan Province, China, and introduced as a new genus, Eurodistus, in the Herpotrichelaceae. Phylogenetic analyses of combined internal transcribed spacer (ITS), the partial nuclear ribosomal large subunit rRNA (LSU), the nuclear ribosomal small subunit rRNA (SSU), and the partial beta-tubulin gene (tub2) sequence data positioned Eurodistus within the genus Veronaea in Herpotrichiellaceae. Eurodistus is distinguished from other genera in Herpotrichiellaceae by its acrogenous, solitary, obclavate, elongated, and distoseptate conidia. These morphological characteristics primarily correspond to certain species in Distoseptispora, Sporidesmium, and Linkosia in Sordariomycetes, as well as Corynespora and Sporidesmiella in Dothideomycetes. However, such morphology have not been previously documented in the family Herpotrichiellaceae (Eurotiomycetes). Our study expands the known morphological diversity within Herpotrichiellaceae and further highlights the polyphyletic nature of the family.

Abstract:The PrePARED project aims to improve our understanding of predator-prey interactions around offshore wind farms to reduce uncertainty in impact assessments and improve models of seabird, marine mammal, and fish distribution. This collaborative project involves nine organisations and focuses on prey availability (fish) as a key factor in predator distribution around wind farm infrastructure. Between 2022-2025, telemetry studies, using gadoid fish (including Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), whiting (Merlangius merlangus) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus)) are being carried out in the Moray Firth. Wood-inhabiting fungi play a key role in ecosystem processes, especially in wood decomposition and the recycling of organic matter. A new wood-inhabiting fungus, Epithele odontioidea, collected from Eastern China, is illustrated and described based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses. The new species is characterized by resupinate, farinaceous basidiomata, white to grayish, odontioid hymenial surface due to hyphal pegs, monomitic hyphal system, generative hyphae with clamp connections, and ellipsoid to oblong-ellipsoid basidiospores measuring 13.2–18.2 × 6.8–8.7 µm. Phylogenetic analyses of the new species were conducted using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and nuclear ribosomal large subunit (nLSU) sequences. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that the new species belongs to the genus Epithele and is grouped with the species E. efibulata. A description, illustrations, phylogenetic analysis results, and a comparison with the closely related species of the new species are provided.

Abstract
Five new Rhyparus Westwood, 1845 species from Southeast Asia are described and illustrated: Rhyparus banyuwangiensis Minkina, sp. nov. from Indonesia (Java), R. crockerrangensis Minkina, sp. nov. from Malaysia (Borneo), R. edelmani Minkina, sp. nov. from Indonesia (Sulawesi), R. halmaheraensis Minkina, sp. nov. from Indonesia (Halmahera) and R. krikkeni Minkina, sp. nov. from Indonesia (Sulawesi). Rhyparus breviceps Paulian, 1984 is reported for the first time from the island of Sulawesi —the population there differs slightly from the typical specimens, as discussed.

Abstract
A new species, Efibula cremea, found in Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses. Efibula cremea is characterized by its coriaceous basidiomata with a grandinioid hymenial surface, a monomitic hyphal system with generative hyphae bearing simple-septate, and ellipsoid basidiospores measuring 4.7–5.7 × 3.3–4 µm. Sequences of ITS and nLSU of the studied samples were generated, and phylogenetic analysis was performed with Maximum Likelihood, Maximum Parsimony, and Bayesian Inference methods. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that the new species belongs to the genus Efibula and is grouped with the taxa E. daweishanensis, E. grandinosa, and E. shenghuae. A description, illustrations, and phylogenetic analysis results of the new species are provided. The discovery of this species not only contributes to the diversity of Efibula in subtropical Asia but also provides further clarification of its phylogenetic relationships.

Abstract
The genus Echinochaete is a low-diversity genus within the family Polyporaceae, currently comprising only five taxonomically recognized species worldwide, suggesting the need for comprehensive revisionary studies. During a fungal survey in northern Thailand, a novel taxon was discovered, representing the first report of the genus. Here, we describe Echinochaete thailandica sp. nov., based on detailed morphological characteristics and two locus phylogenetic analyses (ITS and LSU). The new species is distinguished by lanceolate to cylindrical, longer (37–103 × 6–9 μm) setoid elements bearing lateral spines on the pileus, and cylindrical and large basidiospores (10.5–14.5 × 4.1–6.8 μm). Phylogenetic analyses position E. thailandica within the genus Echinochaete, distinct from all previously described taxa. This finding expands the known distribution of Echinochaete.

Abstract
A new species, Cotylidia macrosporum, is described and illustrated from Puzhao Temple of Mount Tai Scenic Area (Tai’an City, Shandong Province, China) and Longdong Scenic Area (Ji’nan City, Shandong Province, China). It is described as a new species based on morphological, molecular and ecological evidence. Our molecular phylogenetic analyses based on DNA sequences of the internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 with the 5.8S rDNA (ITS) and large subunit of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrLSU) support the inclusion of this new species in the genus Cotylidia as it forms an independent clade in the phylogenetic tree. Morphologically, Cotylidia macrosporum differs from any known species by the combination of basidiome growing on soil, light brownish white pileus on the surface, and relatively big basidiospores (x = 6.17 ± 0.54 × 4.0 ± 0.47 μm; Q = (1.16–) 1.31–2.0 (–2.37), Q m = 1.57 ± 0.22). We present this new species with illustrated morphological description, phylogeny and comparison with morphologically similar or phylogenetically related species.

Abstract
During routine biomonitoring in Europe, an unknown Fragilaria taxon was frequently observed in western Europe, that was initially identified as Fragilaria pectinalis, a species described in the late eighteenth century from the UK and often misidentified. The epitype material of Conferva pectinalis collected in 1802 by Dillwyn was analysed using both light and scanning electron microscope observations. Additional historic material from the Rabenhorst and Grunow collections was likewise investigated and compared to the unknown French Fragilaria populations identified in Wetzel & Ector (2015) as F. pectinalis. While the Rabenhorst material was identified as F. pectinalis, the taxon described by Grunow as Synedra capitellata f. striis-distantioribus was transferred to the genus Fragilaria and raised to species level. The French populations showed sufficient morphological differences to be separated as a new species, Fragilaria lucectorii, based on valve outline, shape of the apices and stria density. Comparisons are made with similar taxa and brief notes on their ecology are added.

In the floodplain of the river, the route crossed small treeless areas, with a total length of about 100 m. The beginning and the end of the route fell on the forest edges. The woody vegetation on the route corresponded to different stages of natural regeneration of spruce-deciduous forests in cuttings, arable lands and meadows. The main canopy-forming tree species are spruce Picea abies, fluffy birch Betula pubescens and warty B. pendula, as well as aspen Populus tremula. Occasionally, as a rule, on the slopes of the southern exposure, the petiolate oak Quercus robur is marked in the stand of the first tier, and in the second tier the holly maple Acer platanoides and the small-leaved linden Tilia cordata. The age of the first-tier stand on the route varied from 35 to 110 years, and the height of the stand from 15 to 33 m. A more detailed botanical description of the route was given earlier (Cherenkov, Gubenko et al. 1995; Cherenkov S.E. 2023).\nThe route was marked with the numbered stakes located every 25 m. The geographic coordinates of the stakes were determined using a GPS navigator.\nRegular bird counts were conducted along the route using an improved version of territory mapping method (Tomiałojc 1980; Verner 1985; Priednieks et al. 1986). A plane-table mounted horizontally on a tripod was used for mapping. A strip of millimeter paper with stake numbers marked on it was attached to the plane-table. The strip was shifted gradually by the observer as the route was traversed. The tripod was set up at each stake point, and the plane-table was oriented. Birds were counted during 5 minutes from points located 50 m apart. The majority of bird species were recorded within a radius of 100 m from the stake. The counts were conducted on days without precipitation and strong winds. The counting started in the first or second hour after sunrise. Birds were only mapped on the first half of the route on one morning, and on the second half on the next morning with good weather. The mapping visits were made regularly at intervals of 4-6 days. At every next complete (two mornings) visit, the observer changed the direction of movement to the opposite. For each visit, the date, start and end time and geographic coordinates, distance traveled, weather conditions, etc. were recorded. \nFor each bird detected during the visit, the position on the map (relative coordinates - X, Y), species, sex, age, and behavior (singing, courtship, non-singing, with food, with nest material, etc.) were recorded. Also, mostly for singing males, the coordinates of observed movements and of simultaneously observed individuals of each species were noted. Abstract
The genus Microcera belonging to the family Nectriaceae, includes fungi that cause diseases in both fruit trees and scale insects. During our investigation of pathogens and insects on economically important plants in Zhejiang Province, China, a nectriaceous fungus with flame-like conidiomata was found associated with the bark of Rosaceae plants and the scale insect Pseudaulacaspis pentagona, which colonizes the bark. Using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference phylogenetic analyses based on multi-locus sequence data from ITS, LSU, acl 1, act, cmdA, his 3, rpb 1, rpb 2, tef 1, and tub 2, we determined that this fungus clusters with M. pseudaulacaspidis, M. kuwanaspidis, and M. coccophila within the Microcera clade. Pairwise homoplasy index tests showed no significant evidence of recombination between this species and the related taxa, confirming it as a novel species. This new species, Microcera gongcheniae, is characterized by masses of orange to red, flame-like sporodochia formed on both the bark and the scale insect, as well as hyaline, cylindrical, slightly curved macroconidia formed in the sporadochia. The macroconidia of M. gongcheniae are longer than those of its sister species M. pseudaulacaspidis.

Next to the native range, as presented by FGAR, introduced populations have also been included, as the aim of this matrix is to support an acoustic recognition model. This way, the matrix shows all possible species which can be recorded in every country and island, not just the native inhabitants. A list of introduced species per region is included below. It also includes two commonly accepted species of hybrids with a wide distribution, Pelophylax kl. grafi (P. perezi x P. ridibundus) and Pelophylax kl. esculentus (P. lessonae x P. ridibundus).","gettingStarted":"As the distribution maps in FGAR can be unclear for the distribution in smaller islands, these have been checked using separate literature (Egea-Serrano, 2015; Pinya & Carretero, 2011; Malkmus, 2011; Gabriel & Borges, 2022; Kunkel, 1976). Also, Cyprus is not within the area treated by FGAR but is added to the matrix as it is an European island. This has caused the inclusion of three extra species to the matrix, Hyla savignyi, Pelophylax cypriensis and Bufotes cypriensis (Baier et al, 2013; Plötner et al, 2015; Dufresnes et al, 2019; Speybroeck et al, 2020). Furthermore, there have been some recent developments in anuran taxonomy and nomenclature. For instance, genetic analysis shows a diversification in Midwife toads, Alytes spp. (Dufresnes and Hernandez, 2021). This paper shows that there are two species present in Northern Iberia (A. obstreticans + A. almogavarii), with multiple genetic lineages, with suggested subspecies status. Following Speybroeck et al (2020), these subspecies have not been included in the matrix, but it is good to keep in mind that these might be updated to species level in later years. A. almogavarii was not included in FGAR but has been added to the matrix following these authors in 2020. The parsley frogs (Pelodytes spp.) also show genetic divergence within Iberia. Diaz-Rodriguez and colleagues (2017) reveal two new species: P. atlanticus and P. hespericus. In this matrix, P. atlanticus has been included due to its clear distribution pattern, limited to Portugal where it is the only extant species of this complex. P. hespericus has not been included, following Speybroeck et al (2020). It does however show acoustic divergence from the rest of the species complex, which may lead to further research and accepted species status in the future (Diaz-Rodriguez et al, 2017). Furthermore, a new species has recently been split from the Pelobates syriacus complex, P. balcanicus (Dufresnes et al, 2019). It occupies the western range in the Southern Balkans. P. syriacus is restricted on the European continent to SE Bulgaria, European Turkey and several eastern Aegean island including Limnos, Lesbos and Kos and its distribution ranges further east. Rana parvipalmata has also recently been distinguished as a new species by Dufresnes and colleagues (2020). It occupies Galicia and Asturias in NW Iberia, with R. temporaria extending from Cantabria to the rest of Europe. Next, some authors distinguish a separate species within the Pelophylax ridibundus complex: P. kurtmuelleri (Lukanov et al, 2015). This taxon occupies the southern Balkan countries and Greece, with an unknown number of introductions in other European countries. It has been shown to have differing acoustics and a genetic divergence. Even though it is available on Xeno-Canto.org, it is not included in the matrix due to uncertainty in molecular differences to P. ridibundus and an unclear distribution, following FGAR and Speybroeck et al (2020). Finally, the Italian pool frog (P. lessonae bergeri) is a subspecies with species potential. It occupies the Italian peninsula and the island of Corsica. Introduced populations according to FGAR: Xenopus laevis: Non-European species from C and S Africa. Next to the distribution in FGAR, it has been recorded in Portugal (Ferreira, 2014) Alytes obstreticans: UK (FGAR), Balearic Islands (Pinya & Carretero, 2011) Discoglossus pictus: European mainland populations stem from ancient introductions to Spain and France from Algeria Bufotes viridis: Balearic Islands (Pinya & Carretero, 2011) Hyla meridionalis: Balearic Islands (Pinya & Carretero, 2011). Abstract
Helminthosporium taiwanense sp. nov., isolated from a submerged decaying woody twig in a freshwater stream in Taiwan, is described and illustrated. While morphologically similar to Ellismarsporium due to its production of cylindrical conidia in short chains, multi-locus phylogenetic analyses based on a combined dataset of ITS, LSU, SSU, rpb2, and tef1-α sequences revealed it to be a distinct and undescribed species of Helminthosporium. The morphological boundaries and phylogenetic placement of the genus Ellismarsporium are discussed in light of this discovery.

Abstract
Three new species of Microlaimidae are described from the sand coast of the Sea of Japan (Russian coast). Among previously discovered free-living nematodes, the genera Microlaimus and Bolbolaimus are recorded for the first time. Bolbolaimus mirandus sp. nov. is characterised by anterior cephalic region set off from the body, large cuticularised buccal cavity with one strong dorsal tooth and two noticeable subventral teeth, muscular anterior and posterior pharyngeal bulbs, curved not cephalated spicules, short and simple gubernaculum, and short and conical tail. Bolbolaimus selinae sp. nov. has an annulated cuticle with very close and fine longitudinal bars; anterior and posterior pharyngeal bulb; large buccal cavity with one large dorsal tooth, two small subventral teeth in the anterior part, and transversal rows of protrusions in the posterior part; amphidial fovea oval shaped in males and circular shaped in females. Microlaimus asiaticus sp. nov. is characterised by monospiral amphidial fovea turning ventrally at the level of posterior part of cup-shaped buccal cavity, weakly conspicuous dorsal tooth and two small subventral protrusions; small circular pharyngeal bulb; four conical precloacal supplements in male, and conical tail. These findings expand the taxonomic knowledge and geographic distribution of Microlaimidae in the Pacific region.

Abstract
Seven new species of the genus Diochus Erichson, 1839 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae, Staphylininae, Diochini) are described in this paper: Diochus quadraticeps sp. nov. and D. sinuatus sp. nov. from Thailand; D. moluccanus sp. nov. from Indonesia; D. ullrichi sp. nov. and D. madangensis sp. nov. from Papua New Guinea; D. insularis sp. nov. from China (Taiwan, Hongkong), Japan, Mauritius, Reunion and Rodriguez; D. parvoculatus sp. nov. from Peru. Photographs and line drawing plates for each new species are provided.
