Not only is it the centre of considerable and varied fishing industries, and affording therefore unusual facilities for securing abundance of interesting and valuable material for study; but it forms, as it were, a connecting link between the -fishing industries and the marine fauna of the southern waters of the Dominion, as found in Passamaquoddy Bay, and the more northerly fisheries and fauna of the Gulf of St. Lawrence proper.'","relatedProjects":[],"abstract":"After carrying on its work for two years at St. Andrews, N.B., the Marine Biological Station was moved to Canso, N.S., early during the season, and the staff were engaged in important fishery and scientific investigations at that great centre of the maritime fishing industries. In 1903 the biological station was moved to PEI.\n\nDuring the spring of 1901 the floating station was towed from New Brunswick to Nova Scotia. On arrival at Canso the station was at once beached and placed in position at the east end of the town of Canso. During its stay in Canso, it resulted in a selection of fishery papers covering a series of subjects no less varied and directly bearing upon the great problems of the fisheries of the Atlantic coast and of the waters of the Dominion of Canada."},"samplingDescription":{"studyExtent":"Biological station located in Canso, NS used as the base for this study.","sampling":"A detailed list of species observed in the area was compiled. Samples collected from numerous locations around canso: clear water identified large patches growing at depths of ten fathoms, these were obtained by dredging; other forms growing nearby below and between tide marks; tide pools of varying range and size were easily accessible and quieter coves and wharves yielded other forms.","qualityControl":"Scientific names associated with resource occurrence records have been mapped to recognized standards - marine taxa have been mapped to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). The WoRMS codes, the AphiaIDs have been included as LSIDs in the occurrence record DwC field scientificNameID. \n\nA nominal set of coordinates was assigned for this dataset. All sampling occurred in and around Canso, the location of the floating biological station.
