Avocado, citrus, mango, papaya, and pineapple are among the most important fruit crops in Burundi, Kenya, and Uganda for local consumption and export markets. Despite their economic and nutritional significance, the full production potential of these crops has not been realized due to persistent challenges: stringent phytosanitary requirements for international trade, environmental stress, and pest infestations. Scale insect (Hemiptera) infestations stand out as a major constraint to both production and market access. Due to their cryptic nature, small size, and morphological complexity, scale insects are difficult to detect and identify, thereby complicating management and regulatory interventions.
This study was conducted to assess the current status of scale insects infestations in avocado, mango, pineapple, and pawpaw across Burundi, Kenya, and Uganda. Samples collected from the three countries were processed at the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) and the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS). The findings revealed that papaya mealybug (Paracoccus marginatus) was occurring consistently across all the surveyed countries. The prevalence underscores the urgent need for harmonized regional strategies in monitoring, identification, and management of scale insects to safeguard fruit production and sustain market access. However, there is a gap in the database on scale insects from Burundi, Kenya, and Uganda. This publication provides current data that can be utilized by end users, including National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs), researchers, farmers, and policy makers.
