It documents the historical diversity and distribution of the Portuguese herpetofauna, including Iberian endemic species and specimens collected mainly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collection was established in 1887 by Lopes Vieira and has been expanded and curated through subsequent updates. A digital inventory initiated in 2012 was updated from 2020 onward, including the assignment of new catalog numbers and the revision of taxonomic nomenclature. The taxonomic treatment was reviewed in 2024 using current nomenclatural resources, including AmphibiaWeb and The Reptile Database. The dataset supports research in herpetology, taxonomy, biogeography, biodiversity history and the use of museum collections in conservation research.\n ","language":"eng","citation":{"text":"Correia T, Rufino C (2026). Specimens without proper labeling were also excluded if Portugal provenance was not clear. The temporal distribution is mainly concentrated in the decades of 1880’s and 1890's. Only three specimens are recorded for the 21st century, in 2003, 2017 and 2018 years.","sampling":"The dataset primarily derives from the Reptile and Amphibian Collection curated by Lopes Vieira in the late nineteenth century. Additional material was obtained through zoological expeditions conducted by the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra between 1880 and 1892, as documented in historical collection records. The collection was further expanded through donations from individual contributors and institutions, including Adolpho Frederico Moller and the Instituto da Conservação da Natureza. Collection information was compiled from historical catalogs and registers, including those prepared by Lopes Vieira in 1887 and 1897 and by António Themido in 1942. Specimens documented as transferred to other museums are excluded from this dataset. Historical catalog information was compared with the physical collection, and one cataloged specimen could not be located.","qualityControl":"The information found in the specimens was crossed with the two existing old catalogs and also with the compiled information in the registration book number 3, 4, 5 and 6 and in an Excel spreadsheet. Nomenclature was checked through available literature and using online databases AmphibiaWeb (https://amphibiaweb.org/) and The Reptile Database (http://www.reptile-database.org/).\n\nGeoreferencing followed Chapman and Wieczorek (2020) guidelines, utilizing GeoNames geographical database as the primary reference, and GEOLocate web application as complementary. This approach addressed challenges posed by historical and imprecise locality data. For specimens with ambiguous information, broader geographic areas were used as reference points (e.g., for specimens only indicating the city with the same name as a district). Coordinate uncertainty was determined for each record, acknowledging potential imprecision in historical descriptions. This method ensured consistent and appropriate spatial data assignment, balancing accuracy with the limitations of archival data. All coordinates are given in geographic format, decimal degrees, datum WGS 84.","methodSteps":["The herpetological collections were catalogued using the software Microsoft Excel. We conducted extensive shelf surveys to locate all specimens of native reptiles and amphibians in the Museum. After locating the specimens, basic curatorial procedures were implemented. All information associated with specimens and jars was systematically documented, cross-referenced, and linked to each specimen. Taxonomic updates were applied using the most current literature (AmphibiaWeb and The Reptile Database) and aligned with accepted nomenclature. Specimen localities were georeferenced using GeoNames geographical database and GEOLocate web application, with coordinate uncertainty recorded where feasible. For records lacking sufficient locality details, coordinates could not be determined.
