Mikkov Island is situated in Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea in the northwest of European Russia and belongs to Kandalaksha County, Murmansk Region, Russia. The Island occupies 76 ha and is 1650 m long and 870 m wide; it is located at the exit of Kovda Bay, 500 m from Krivoy Island, and separated from the latter by the Mikkov Salma Strait. Currently Mikkov Island consists of two parts, connected by a narrow isthmus. The eastern part is kidney-shaped with a large rock 19.6 m high. The western part is irregularly rectangular, with small rock outcrops, below the main part of the Island, composed of sandy-rocky deposits less than 10 m high. The Paleoproterozoic palingenic granitoids are especially famous on the Island; to preserve these geological formations, a protected territory – geological nature monument of regional significance \"Granitoids of Mikkov Island\" – was established in 1980 on an area of 10 ha. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Island appeared as two separate islands – Bolshoi (eastern part) and Malyi (western part) Mikkov. The territory of Kandalaksha Bay has experienced a constant uplift due to neotectonic and glacioisostatic processes after the end of the Quaternary glaciations. As a result of these processes, the strait between the islands has become shallower and an isthmus has emerged, connecting both parts of the Islands. The core part of the Island is covered by boreal forests with various swamp sites. The outer parts of the Island harbor diverse coastal meadows and tundra-like communities with crowberry. In the beginning of the 20th century, a harbor pilot service house operated on the Island, serving the ships that entered the roadstead to the Kovda sawmills. In this regard, Mikkov is sometimes called Pilot (Lotsmanskii) Island. Nowadays, there is no permanent population or any other human activity on the Island.","boundingBox":{"minLatitude":66.699,"maxLatitude":66.71,"minLongitude":32.98,"maxLongitude":33.02,"globalCoverage":false}}],"temporalCoverages":[],"keywordCollections":[{"thesaurus":"GBIF Dataset Type Vocabulary: http://rs.gbif.org/vocabulary/gbif/dataset_type_2015-07-10.xml","keywords":["Occurrence"]},{"thesaurus":"GBIF Dataset Subtype Vocabulary: http://rs.gbif.org/vocabulary/gbif/dataset_subtype.xml","keywords":["Observation"]}],"samplingDescription":{"studyExtent":"The dataset has been prepared in the course of an inventory of plants and lichens of Mikkov Island in Kandalaksha Bay (White Sea).","sampling":"Field botanical research was carried out in July and August 2019 using the route method. The study included an inventory of the diversity of vascular plants (M. Kozhin), bryophytes (E. Borovichev, M. Kozhin, E. Kudr) and lichens (A. Melekhin). Particular attention was paid to discovering populations of rare species: all suitable habitats and substrates were surveyed, and a visual assessment of the number of reproductive individuals and their viability was carried out in accordance with the IUCN recommendations. A Garmin positioning device was used for georeferencing. Vouchers (herbarium specimens) were deposited in the collections of the N.A. Avrorin Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden-Institute of the KSC RAS (KPABG) and the Institute of North Industrial Ecology Problems of the KSC RAS (INEP).\nPreviously, Mikkov Island was visited by D.D. Sokolov in 1989–1991, when he collected materials for his book «Flora of the vicinity of Kovda Village» (1992). He reported 128 species of vascular plants from the Island. We compared our list of vascular plants with these historical data and partly corrected Sokolov’s list because of our re-identification of his specimens in the Moscow State University Herbarium (MW), which were collected from the island and neighboring territories: Dactylorhiza fuchsii (Druce) Soó → D. maculata (L.) Soó, Dryopteris carthusiana (Vill.) H.P.Fuchs → D. expansa (C.Presl) Fraser-Jenk. & Jermy, Euphrasia brevipila Burnat & Gremli and E. vernalis List → Euphrasia wettsteinii G.L.Gusarova, Festuca arenaria Osbeck → F. rubra L., Luzula sudetica (Willd.) Schult. → L. multiflora subsp. frigida (Buchenau) V.I.Krecz., Rumex acetosa L. → R. thyrsiflorus Fingerh.","methodSteps":["Field botanical investigations;","Identification of vouchers (herbarium specimens);","Analyze of literature on flora of the Island;","Creation of the Dataset."]},"countryCoverage":[],"collections":[],"dataDescriptions":[],"dataLanguage":"eng","pubDate":"2025-05-12T00:00:00.000+00:00","maintenanceUpdateFrequency":"AS_NEEDED","maintenanceDescription":"","license":"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/legalcode","dwca":{"coreType":"http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/Occurrence","extensions":[],"modified":"2026-07-10T14:55:05.697+00:00"},"approximateCounts":{"occurrenceCount":528}}
