and breeding status in the study area, based on a regular grid of 1x1 km UTM squares. The method use was deemed suitable to assess the sampling of all species occurring in the area of the study block, and of an associated control area. For the purpose of estimating the number of grids to be sampled, the overlap of the UTM grid with the study area was considered, determined as the area defined by the outer limits of the Irrigation Block and the Cuba IBA, plus a buffer of 500 m, as well as by the control area. In addition, all UTM grids with less than 50% of the area within the study area were removed from the study area.","relatedProjects":[],"abstract":"The dataset contains records of all birds collected in the area of the Secondary Irrigation Network of the Alqueva Dam (Block A: Alvito-Pisão) and in the Important Bird Area (IBA) of Cuba, in the framework of a “Bird Atlas” performed within the General Bird Monitoring Plan of the area, promoted by EDIA, S.A. In order to maximize the probability of detecting birds, the visits were carried out under favorable weather conditions, namely the absence of wind and rain (Rabaça, 1995; Bibby et al., 2000). Each square was visited twice during the breeding season.\n\nFieldwork took place between sunrise and sunset, excluding the hottest hours of the day due to the reduced activity of most bird species (e.g., Robbins, 1981). During each visit to a given grid, all contacts and observations made were recorded on a field sheet, along with a number of other biological and environmental parameters (age, sex, flight behavior, habitat) and the probability of breeding [only in the breeding season], according to a numeric code, aggregated into three possibilities: “no confirmed breeding” (0), “possible breeding” (1-3), probable breeding (4-10) and confirmed breeding (11-16) (Equipa Atlas, 2008). \n\nRegarding the habitat of occurrence, a pre-established list of habitat classes was used, which based on the COS 2007 (Land Use and Occupation Chart for Mainland Portugal for 2007), produced by the Portuguese Geographical Institute.","qualityControl":"All identifications were performed by qualified technicians","methodSteps":["To be completed"]},"countryCoverage":[],"collections":[],"dataDescriptions":[],"dataLanguage":"eng","purpose":"This dataset is part of a broader initiative whereby the company EDIA, S.A. will make available all biodiversity data collected during impact assessment and biological monitoring studies.","pubDate":"2025-11-07T00:00:00.000+00:00","maintenanceUpdateFrequency":"AS_NEEDED","maintenanceDescription":"This resource will be regularly checked for accuracy.","license":"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","dwca":{"coreType":"http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/Event","extensions":["http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/Occurrence"],"modified":"2025-11-07T15:03:44.529+00:00"},"approximateCounts":{"occurrenceCount":27790}}
