However, for periods longer than a year, the main factors limiting this flux may be associated with the exchange of carbon between the upper ocean and the ocean interior.\nhttp://ijgofs.whoi.edu/","relatedProjects":[]},"samplingDescription":{"studyExtent":"Samples were collected as part of JGOFS multidisciplinary cruise (18HU92037)originating out of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Dartmouth, NS to the North Atlantic.","sampling":"Zooplankton was collected in vertical net hauls between 100-120m to the surface using a 0.75 m diameter ring net fitted with a 202 micron mesh. The cod-end was attached to the weight on the bottom of the hydro-wire and the towing bridle, to a crossbow mounted on the wire at a height above the weight such that the net was held vertically. In this configuration zooplankton were only collected as the net was towed upwards at 0.5 m s-1. Actual depth sampled is the length of hydro-wire out. The volume of water sampled was assumed to be the volume of the cylinder filtered by the net, assuming the wire angle is vertical and there is negligible clogging of the mesh. Samples were preserved in 2% Borax buffered formalin. (Campbell & Head 2000) \n\nThe sample was size fractionated before analysis using a set of three sieves: 0.2micron; 0.5micron and 1mm. The samples were then split using a Motoda sampler and then further subsampled using a large volume pipetter with a truncated mouth until the targeted number of 200 organisms in the counted sample was reached. The subsampled aliquots were poured in a Bogorov tray and each individual was counted and identified to the lowest taxonomical unit under a stereomicroscope. \n\nAdditional plankton samples were collected for grazing and excretion experiments (Head and Harris 1994, Head et al 1996).","qualityControl":"Scientific names listed in the BioChem database species list have been mapped to recognized standards - marine taxa have been mapped to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) using their online taxon match tool.
