Notes on vegetation (none, algae, eelgrass, kelp, seaweed) and intertidal and subtidal substrate (sand, stones, pebbles, gravel, cobble, rock, boulders)","sampling":"The field team consisted of 2 people, working together at all times. A 100 metre rope, with markings at 5 metre intervals, and weighted at one end, was placed at the high tide mark (attached to a stationary object) along the shoreline start point of each survey. The start location for each transect line was documented using Garmin GPS Unit.\n\nUsing a marine compass, a direction perpendicular to the shoreline was determined for each transect line. The first surveyor entered the water (in a kayak when water depths were greater than 1.5 meters, on foot when less), carrying the un-weighted end of the 100 metre rope, following the compass direction to maintain a straight line. The second surveyor remained on land and documented field notes as the surveyor in the water conducted the tally. The surveyor entering the water carried a hula-hoop and underwater camera to aid in the survey. As the surveyor made his/her way into the water, he/she scanned the ocean floor for presence of Eelgrass. At the point at which they first encountered Eelgrass, the surveyor stopped and documented abundance. The hula-hoop was centred above this point and the surveyor estimated the percent of bottom covered by Eelgrass within this circle, in one of four classes; 0-25%, 25-50%, 50-75% or >75%. The area was photographed using the underwater camera. The surveyor then proceeded another five metres and repeated the survey. This continued until the surveyor reached the 100 metre boundary, or until visibility no longer allowed for accurate data collection (the latter was the case at many of the study locations due to water depth and turbidity).\n\nThe quadrat size ( i.e. the hulahoop was 0.5m^2)\n\nThe surveyor who remained on land (i.e. the note taker) recorded all data from the surveyor as well as time of day, date, cloud cover, wind, rain, water salinity, wave and tidal conditions.\n\nDuring the 2012 sampling season, two transect lines were established at each of the study locations,. The transect lines were placed at locations that had the greatest chance of encountering eelgrass beds along the transect lines. This was done at the discretion of the field surveyors. In most cases, the transect lines were spaced 50 meters apart.\n\nEelgrass abundance was measured along transects at 5m intervals starting from the high tide mark to 100m. In 2012 the first measurement was at 5m, in 2013 and 2014 there was a measurement at 0m.\n\nEelgrass (Zostera marina) presence and abundance measurement values recorded as follows: blank (not measured), 0 (none observed), 1-25%, 26-50%, 51-75%, 75-100% and NV (Ocean floor not visible at this location).","qualityControl":"Scientific names associated with resource occurrence records have been mapped to recognized standards - marine taxa have been mapped to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS).
