However, many of these areas are under pressure from habitat degradation, illegal extraction and land-use change. The National Protected Areas System Act (NPASA) and Belize’s updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) emphasize the urgent need for reliable biodiversity data to inform planning, policy development and national reporting. Yet, national assessments have shown that while biodiversity data is being collected, particularly within PAs, it is often unmanaged, unpublished and underutilized.\n\nThis project addresses national needs identified through engagement with the National Biodiversity Office (NBIO) and PA co-managers, who conduct biodiversity monitoring, but lack the systems and support to publish their data. Nearly all major taxonomic groups are underrepresented for Belize in GBIF records, and there is currently limited publishing from national institutions.\n\nThe project aims to address these data gaps by mobilizing records on underrepresented taxa including arthropods, mammals, bats, fish, reptiles, amphibians and plants collected within PAs. It supports NBIO in convening national workshops, digitizing and validating datasets and taxonomic checklists, and developing sustainable publishing workflows.
