        <abstract>

            We report a total of 54 records concerning samples collected by Irma Pierpaoli in the last century. The samples are a part of the entire collection of macroalgae species included in the herbarium MBMP. The “Irma Pierpaoli herbarium” is owned by the Marine Biology Museum of Porto Cesareo (Lecce, Italy) related to the DiSTeBA department of Salento University and it was named after the botanist who collected the samples. It was registered in the Hindex Herbariorum site with the code MBMP in July 2024. At the CNR-IRSA in Taranto two herbaria are stored: the Herbarium of the Talassografico Institute “A. Cerruti” and the historical Herbarium “Irma Pierpaoli” dating back to the Twenties of the last century. Irma Pierpaoli, throughout her career as a school teacher, first in Taranto and then in Senigallia, devoted her free time to the study of seaweeds. During the years spent in Taranto, she was a guest of the Talassografico Institute, where she carried out her researches. We owe her the first studies on the benthic seaweeds of the Taranto seas. She left us the aforementioned rich herbarium containing about 600 specimens collected in the high Ionian Sea and in the middle Adriatic.

                    <para>The dataset is a part of the collection MBMP created by Irma Pierpaoli in the last century. During the years spent in Taranto as a teacher, she was a guest of the Talassografico Institute, where she carried out her researches. She collected along the coast of the Mar Grande and Mar piccolo of Taranto numerous samples belonging to the herbarium MBMP. The Rhodophyta dataset of the Taranto Seas, covered a period from 1921 to 1924 and with some samples collected between august and September 1942 and only one in 1947.</para>

                        <descriptorValue>Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Southern Italy), is a semi-enclosed basin divided in two inlets: the first basin “Primo Seno” with a maximum depth 13 m and the second basin “Secondo Seno” with a maximum depth 10 m. The first basin is connected to the Mar Grande, a bay of the Mediterranean Sea, through two channels (Porta Napoli and Navigabile).
It has features of a transition environment since water salinity is influenced by the presence of small tributaries and numerous (about 34) submarine springs (locally called “citri”) which determine the near-surface circulation engine toward the inlets, while the bottom currents moving in the system in opposite through Navigabile and Porta Napoli channels.
In the basin the tidal range is of 30–40 cm the seawater temperature ranges between a minimum of 7.5°C and a maximum value of 32.3°C, while salinity ranges between 33.0 and 37.8 psu.
The Mar Grande of Taranto is a semi-enclosed basin that is connected to the Gulf of Taranto through three artificial dams. The temperature shows seasonal variations typical of the coastal Ionian regions with an average annual value of about 18°C, while the salinity is about 38‰ and is almost uniform over the year.</descriptorValue>
