We sampled five areas, collected 35 samples and found tardigrades in 34 of them. to cover different fens and bogs in Northwestern Italy, Piedmont, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province at different elevation.","sampling":"Each sample consisted of approximately 0.5 kg of wet moss, collected into 1.5 L plastic zip-lock bags.","qualityControl":"Taxonomic identification was performed and crosschecked by two people, Daniel Stec and Daniele Camarda. Taxonomic identification was always performed comparing original descriptions and more recent reviews on the specific taxonomic groups. Georeferenced data were checked by plotting coordinates on a map.","methodSteps":["All samples were transported to the laboratory and processed either on the same day or stored in the fridge and processed the following day. In the laboratory, each sample was washed and sieved through a set of sieves with mesh sizes of 500 µm, 250 µm, and 36 µm. Material retained on the finest sieve (36 µm) was washed into Falcon tubes and frozen for later examination. Aliquots of the mixed material were transferred to Petri dishes and examined under a stereomicroscope. Tardigrade specimens were isolated using a glass pipette or an Irwin loop. No more than ten Petri dishes were checked per sample during this phase of the study.","All extracted specimens were mounted in permanent slides for examination under light microscope.
