National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC) is the first National Research and Innovation Center dedicated to biodiversity, funded by the MUR through European Union funds - NextGenerationEU. It is a coordinating structure that unites and enhances research efforts, while simultaneously making knowledge and technologies accessible to diverse actors working on theterritory. There are more than 2,000 researchers from research centers, universities and companies working within the center implementing basic, applied and innovation research actions dedicated to Mediterranean biodiversity to generate value for the country. The objective of this project is to identify suitable strategies for monitoring, conserving, restoring and valorising the biodiversity of species and habitats in different Italian regions. The Center provides scientific knowledge and technological innovation that make it possible to face biodiversity loss, support ecosystem resilience, monitor endangered species, and restore disturbed biological communities, contributing to the goal of protecting 30% of Italy's territory by 2030, as required by the European Union. The NBFC also has the important function of training young researchers and qualified workers l and transferring to the territory the knowledge and skills needed to protect the natural heritage, as enshrined in Article 9 of the Constitution, and generate socio-economic value. Through participatory research actions, shared planning and citizen science activities, the NBFC contributes to generate the culture of nature, bringing the knowledge of biodiversity to different contexts starting from school of different levels, raising public awareness and supporting policy makers in land planning and management."},"samplingDescription":{"studyExtent":"8Flora of upper Arno valley, with fewer contribution from other parts of Tuscany and Italy.","sampling":"Herbarium specimens had been prepared through usual gathering, fixing and storing practices, within an unquantifiable number of collecting and research activities, either organised and managed by the owner institution/person or by a donor involved in later material exchanges. Mass digitization was performed thanks to a workflow set by Picturae and adapted within the NBFC project, in order to achieve both high-resolution imaging and databasing (label transcription) at MIDS2 level; the basic Darwin Core filled at the first version of present dataset, thanks to the transcription effort performed by Alembo, were those related to collection (verbatimLocality, recordedBy, eventDate) and first identification (verbatimIdentification, identifiedBy, dateIdentified) events, as retrieved from specimens labels, plus - when available - the scientific name and higer geography retrieved from the first-level organisational unit (folders) labels. Pre-existing unique identifiers (either barcodes or QRcodes) have been also transcribed to allow future allignment of new data with those already recorded. Further information, including corrections and integrations to the first version of this dataset, has been and will be object of forthcoming, new versions.","methodSteps":["Usual herbarium specimen preparation: collecting, drying, labelling, storing.","Digitization: QRcode-labelling of cubbies, folders and sheets, and imaging (Picturae); remote transcription (Alembo); transcription files merging, DarwinCore alignment, data cleaning (by the \"resource creators\" of the present dataset)."]},"countryCoverage":[],"collections":[{"name":"Erbario pteridologico di Rodolfo Emilio Giuseppe Pichi Sermolli | Rodolfo Emilio Giuseppe Pichi Sermolli's pteridological herbarium","identifier":"https://registry.gbif.org/collection/f1c79463-929f-4e32-b764-6881d0afe07c","parentIdentifier":"https://registry.gbif.org/collection/19961847-31f6-4abb-9b92-18a391ba9b0d","specimenPreservationMethod":"DRIED_AND_PRESSED","curatorialUnits":[]}],"dataDescriptions":[],"dataLanguage":"eng","acknowledgements":"This dataset was created thanks to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan of Italian Ministry of University and Research funded by EU – Next Generation EU Mission 4 “Education and Research” – Component 2: “From research to business” – Investment 1.4 (NBFC, National Biodiversity Future Center). This collection was imaged within a massive herbaria digitization project led by the University of Padua (leader of NBFC Spoke 7 \"Outreach\"), and held by Picturae (Amsterdam, NL), between February 2024 and December 2025, while its first databasing was achieved with the support of Alembo (Paramaribo, SR). The Picturae imaging equipment was settled and hosted in the Italian Central Herbarium, which is part of the Florence University Museal System (SMA). The final outcome is the result of a collective effort; as a consequence, the authors of this dataset aknowledge it is just the final stage of a long walk and wish to express their deep gratitude to all those who, in various capacities, have contributed to such final achievement. First of all, we wish to thank the two project scientific responsible, Elena Canadelli in Padua and Alessio Papini in Florence who, together with the technical reponsible - Lorenzo Cecchi - followed each project phase since 2023, ensuring its execution and contributing to solve unforeseen events. Special thanks are due to the Florence (FI) herbarium staff (Stefano Di Natale, Anna Donatelli, Lorenzo Lastrucci and Chiara Nepi) for their unmissable assistance, to Stefano Martellos (University of Trieste) for his consistent support and advise, to Victor Shields and Julia Szalewicz, the two irrepleaceable Picturae project managers, to Alessio Galletti, responsible for herbarium logistics, and to the whole Picturae staff in Florence, i.e., the people who carefully handled the herbarium specimens and got their imaging at the conveyor belts: Stefania Bigi, Giulia Cavezza, Martina Coppi, Simona De Francisci, Giulia De Robertis, Andra Ioana Dumitru, Annalisa Ferro, Livia Garomersini, Tania Gianoncelli, Giulia Grassini, Leila Harkat, Martina Marcucci, Genni Serena Olivieri, Enrico Pecchioli, Valentina Rappazzo, Francesca Ravello, Daniele Romeo, Monia Ruccione, Eliana Santella, Federica Scali, Matteo Scarpelli and Elena Succi.
