Within the framework of BLUEFORESTING project (PT-INNOVATION-0077), the subtidal macroalgal forests were mapped along the coast of Northern Portugal, a critical climatic biogeographical transitional zone for species range boundaries. The seabed was classified according to the predominant substrate (sand, rock, and combination of sand and rock) while, in parallel, the eventual occurrences of subtidal macroalgae were registered. The substrates of rock, and combination of sand and rock, represented by 68.35% of sampling sites. The occurrences of macroalgae was, in contrast, 38.07%. The most frequent case was the exclusive presence of Saccorhiza polyschides, followed by sites solely dominated by Laminaria hyperborea. In terms of abundance, the most frequent class observed in S. polyschides was Abundant, while L. hyperborea was more often classified as Occasional. Within the limits of the Portuguese Northern Region, our study focused on approximately 90 km coastline stretching from Moledo (41.85N) to Praia de Aguda(41.05N) . This area encompasses the so-called Parque Natural Litoral Norte(PNLN), located in the municipality of Esposende, which extends along 18 km of coastline, with 7653 ha of Marine Protected Area (MPA).","sampling":"The sampling campaign was designed to maximize the spatial representativeness of the study area. A total of 105 hours at sea, mostly distributed over the period June - August of 2022 and 2023, allowed to sample an estimated marine area of 200 km². To\nthis end, 436 sampling sites, established along imaginary 128 transects perpendicular to the coastline and spaced 1 km apart, were considered. The sampling sites covered a bathymetry ranged between 2 m and 35 m depth, corresponding to an approximate distance of 0.1–7.5 km from the shoreline. Such bathymetry limits determined the length of imaginary transects.
