Releases are less well represented along the Labrador Coast, the West coast of Newfoundland and the Quebec North shore. Offshore releases were most concentrated on the NE Newfoundland Shelf and on the northern, and north-central Grand Bank and least concentrated on the eastern and southern Grand Bank, St. Pierre Bank and the Flemish Cap. The majority of experiments in the 1952-1955 and 1962-1966 periods were conducted in the coastal regions whereas coastal and offshore experiments were conducted during the 1978-1991 and 1992-1993 periods.\n\nTagged cod released in the Newfoundland tagging experiments have been reported from virtually all NF Grid Map Areas overlying the NE Newfoundland Shelf as far North as Cape Chidley; the Grand Banks as far South as the \"tail\" of the Grand Bank and East to the Flemish Cap; the Gulf of St Lawrence and the eastern Scotian Shelf. The most extensive ranges of reported recaptures among the year groups are observed for the 1962-1966 period. Overall, the number of cod reported as recaptured from inshore locations are more than double the number of cod reported from offshore locations.\n\nLong-distance cod migrants (recaptures reported from outside of the standard chart area) are reported from the 1954-1955 and 1962-1966 periods only. Of the verified reports, the majority (18 of 29) were reported from West Greenland, with the remainder being reported from the Iceland region (6), the North Sea (1) and the Barents Sea (4).\n\nAlthough twice as many tagged cod were release during the 1978 to 1993 periods relative to the 1954 to 1966 periods, no tags were reported as recaptured in any of these distant areas from the tagging experiments conducted between 1978 and 1993.","sampling":"These data represent a total of 177 sequentially ordered \"experiments\" comprising four major periods of tagging initiatives; 1954 through\n1955(19,061 records), 1962 through 1966 (45,760 records), 1978 through 1991 (130,908 records) and 1992 through 1993 (9,693 records). Each individual experiment is generally defined by a finite number of cod that were tagged over a finite period (generally, but not exclusively, one to several days) within a relatively restricted area (generally, but not exclusively, <30 nm radius). \n\nDisc and dangler and T-bar anchor \"spaghetti\" tags were the primary tags employed. The source document (Taggart et al 1995) indicates that it should be possible to parse the type of tag from one of the database fields but this did not appear to be easy and so information related to the type of tag attached to individual specimens is not included in this version of the dataset.","qualityControl":"Scientific names associated with resource occurrence records have been mapped to recognized standards - marine taxa have been mapped to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). The WoRMS codes, the AphiaIDs have been included as LSIDs in the occurrence record DwC field scientificNameID. This dataset contains only one species, cod (Gadus morhua) and one associated taxon (Lemaeocera branchialis), a gill parasite.\n\nFor records where release or capture location information was a NAFO fishing area and no latitude/longitude coordinates were provided nominal positions were assigned based upon area definitions obtained from www.marineregions.org UPDATE!!!!!!!!!\n\nSample locations were plotted to confirm points located within the defined study area.","methodSteps":["The original data records were archived by DFO NL and stored as a collection of ascii flat files.\n\nIn 2015, an OBIS view of the cod tagging database was created and Darwin Core (DwC) records were extracted from the database in the required IPT format. Appendix A from the report was used to map and reformat fields and content from the report used to assign default values where required.\n\nThe original report includes information related to the collection of cod in addition to the release and recapture locations. In this resource the location and date/time of the original specimen collection is not included.\n\nThe latest version of DwC terms has replaced the older IndividualID field with several new terms associated with an OrganismID. This field has been populated by concatenating a number of the source fields: ExperimentNumber|SpeciesCode|specimenNumber|xxxNumber|x|x. An example of the format is as follows '5401_1_NA_14603_NA'\n\nMapping of DwC terms to the original database variables or to default assigned values is as follows:\nOrganismName:\nOrganismScope:'idividual - tagged animal'\nOrganismremarks:\nOccurrenceRemarks populated as follows 'Tagged animal recaptured' or 'Tagged animal released'\n\nEventID = Experiment\n\nIdentifiedBy:'DFO-NAFC'\nRecordedBy:\nSamplingProtocol\n\n\nThe dynamicProperties field contains the following keyword pairs: Length; Age; Weight; NFGridName; DFOUnitArea; DaysFree; MilesTravelled; DegreesofTravel. Missing values were assigned 'NA'.\n\nThese values are also included in the measurements/fact extension. Measurement records are linked to the occurrence records through the occurrenceID. Definitions for the measurementTypes are as follows:\nLength= NA , \nAge= NA , \nWeight= NA , \nNFGridName= J27 , \nDFOUnitArea= 3PN , \nDaysFree= 280 , \nMilesTravelled= 50 , \nDegreesofTravel= 307 '\n\nAll release locations were associated with latitude and longitude. For recapture locations, the latitude and longitude value may have been provided or nominal values assigned based upon grid or statistical areas. According to the Taggart report: 'The data contained within the database can be analyzed at 4 different spatial scales related to tag reporting information. The finest scale is that of the exact latitude and longitude of recapture which is rarely reported «1 %). The second resolution scale (-30 nm) is that of the NF Grid Map Area. Ninety-three percent (93%) of all recaptures in the database were reported from within one of the defined 30'N x 60'W grid-cells that make up the NF Grid Map Areas. The third resolution scale (nominally 60 nm) is that of the approximate locations of centroids of the DFO Statistical Fishing Unit Areas where 94% of the recaptures are reported from one of these defined areas. The final resolution scale (nominally 180 nm) is that where the location of the recapture is reported within one of the defined NAFO convention Subdivisions.' \n\nThe DwC field for coordinatePrecision was assigned as follows:\n1) exact latitude and longitude = 0.01667\n2) NL Grid Map Area = 0.5\n3) DFO Statistical Fishing Unit Areas = 1.0\n4) NAFO convention Subdivisions = 3.0\n\nGeoreference protocol: 'Exact lat/long if provided else centroid of research grid areas or statistical unit areas'.\n\nThe Locality field was populated with the DFO Statistical Fishing Unit Areas which are subareas within the NAFO convention area. These fishing areas are defined in Marineregions.org (MRG) and the DwC LocationIDs were assigned MRGIDs.\n\nThe verbatimLocality was populated with the Newfoundland Grid Map Area Name as defined in the report as the name of the 30'N x 60'W NF Grid Map Area designated latitudinally by an integer (96-99 and 0-44 from North to South) and longitudinally by an integer or letter (8-9 and A-Z from West to East) where fish were captured for tagging.","To replicate content in the Taggart report requires grouping records by season of recapture.
