This dataset covers the areas of Kamrup district at Deepor Beel. It is a permanent freshwater lake formed in a former channel of the Brahmaputra River, located to the south of the main river.\n\nDeepor Beel is the only Ramsar site in Assam and the third Ramsar site in the northeastern region of India. It is situated at an altitude of 53 meters above mean sea level, with a maximum depth of about 4 meters; however, during the dry season, the depth drops to around 1 meter.\n"Refined with better english and GBIF description supported format"\nUnder the Ramsar Convention in 2002, an area of 40.14 sq. km was declared as the Deepor Beel wetland, and 4.14 sq. km was proposed as a bird sanctuary under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of India, 1972 (Government of Assam, 1989).\n\nThe main inlets of the beel are the Mora Bharalu and the Basistha-Bahini rivers, which carry sewage and rainwater from Guwahati city. The only outlet is the Khanajan, located toward the northeast, which connects the beel with the main channel of the Brahmaputra River.\n\nThe wetland is fringed by the Rani–Garbhanga Reserve Forest to the south, and it plays a crucial ecological role in supporting the elephant population and other mammals of the Rani and Garbhanga forests. The Deepor Beel and its surrounding areas are composed of recent alluvium consisting of clay, silt, sand, and pebbles.\n ","language":"eng","homepage":"https://naturematesindia.org","citation":{"text":"Chatterjee L, Samanta T, Basu Roy A, Barve V (2025).
