Data from that study describe the abundance of seaweeds and invertebrates found at three tidal elevation zones (high, middle, and low) for a total of 1170 quadrats. Measurements include the abundance (percent cover) of the different taxa found at each quadrat using a 20 cm × 20 cm frame.\n\nFor data associated with the manipulative part of the study see Watt and Scrosati 2014.\n\nBecause of its taxonomic amplitude and coverage of a wide environmental stress gradient, this data set is potentially useful to address in novel or infrequent ways other broad ecological issues, such as abundance–occupancy relationships, species co-occurrence, species abundance distributions, dominance and rarity, spatial scales of population and community variability, and distribution of phylogenetic diversity.\n\nThis dataset includes both presence and absence occurrence records.</p>","language":"eng","citation":{"text":"Watt C A, Scrosati R A (2021). The manipulative experiment was set up on 3–4 May 2008 and the resulting abundance data was collected on 23–24 April 2009. For information on this study see Watt and Scrosati 2014\n\nThe mensurative study was conducted at four locations: Taylor Head (44° 48.79' N, 62° 34.26' W), Tor Bay Provincial Park (45° 10.97' N, 61° 21.31' W), an unnamed location northeast of Tor Bay Provincial Park (45° 11.11' N, 61° 20.58' W), and Godie Point (45° 36.69' N, 60° 49.19' W). At the unnamed location northeast of Tor Bay Provincial Park, the quadrats used for the manipulative experiment and the mensurative study were different.\n\nThe areas sampled were located at wave-sheltered rocky intertidal habitats between elevations of 0 m (chart datum, or lowest normal tide in Canada) and 1.5 m (above chart datum). The maximum tidal amplitude along this coast is approximately 1.8 m. The selected elevation range is where fucoid canopies (dominated by Ascophyllum nodosum) commonly occur.\n\nThe intertidal communities occurred on rocky substrate that regularly become exposed to aerial conditions during low tides, thus excluding tide pools. The sampling locations were fully marine, without any obvious influence of freshwater inputs except when it rains during low tides. These locations were pristine areas of the coast that show no evident signs of local anthropogenic impacts.","sampling":"The high intertidal zone included areas between 1–1.5 m in elevation (above chart datum), the middle zone included areas between 0.5–1 m in elevation, and the low zone included areas between 0–0.5 m in elevation. \nAt each intertidal zone, we randomly surveyed 70 quadrats (20 cm × 20 cm) at Tor Bay Provincial Park, 100 quadrats at Taylor Head, 100 quadrats at the unnamed location northeast of Tor Bay Provincial Park, and 120 quadrats at Godie Point. \n\nSampling occurred during low tides in May 2008. The abundance (percent cover) of each macroalgal and invertebrate taxon (> 1 mm) was measured using a 20 cm × 20 cm frame divided in 100 squares with monofilament line. For each quadrat, the percent cover of each taxon was determined by counting the number of squares in which the taxon's cover was 50 % or more. If a taxon was present in a quadrat but covered less than 1 % in total, its cover was recorded as 0.5 %","qualityControl":"Scientific names associated with resource occurrence records have been mapped to recognized standards - marine taxa have been mapped to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS).
