Island.","relatedProjects":[],"abstract":"This project primarily aims to provide biodiversity data to the GBIF based on the heritage collection from the University of the Philippines Los Baños Museum of Natural History (UPLB MNH).\nUPLB MNH holds more than 600,000 specimens of Philippine flora and fauna which have been used as research and teaching material. The Museum consists of the Botanical, Forestry, and Mycological Herbaria, Entomological Museum, Zoology and Wildlife Collection, and Microbial Culture Collection. Being situated in the largest Philippine Island of Luzon, majority of specimens deposited in the musuem represent the island. Our oldest collections from Luzon Island date back to 1930s although most of the specimens were destroyed during World War II. Filipino biologists then started rebuilding the reference collections from mid-1940s until the institutionalization of the UPLB Museum of Natural History in 1976.\nCurrently, there is no standard database that exist for the MNH collections although some of the sections’ data are encoded in separate excel files. These inventories do not follow the Darwin core standard and are variable among the workers. These made initial efforts of the museum to publish an online database very difficult. The historical collection of the museum holds huge potential as only around 12% of GBIF occurrence data from Philippines were collected between 1940s to 1970s.
