covering a total area of 81013 ha.","designDescription":"The objective of the study was to determine the general patterns of occurrence of the local species, their abundance and breeding status in the study area, based on a regular grid of 1x1 km UTM squares. The method use was deemed suitable to assess the sampling of all species occurring in the area of the study block, and of an associated control area. For the purpose of estimating the number of grids to be sampled, the overlap of the UTM grid with the study area was considered, determined as the area defined by the outer limits of the Irrigation Block as well as by the control area. In addition, all UTM grids with less than 50% of the area within the study area were removed from the study area. The coordinates used in this dataset correspond to the centroid of each UTM square visited (which is recorded in the “verbatimLocality” column). In order to maximize the probability of detecting birds, the visits were carried out under favorable weather conditions, namely the absence of wind and rain (Rabaça, 1995; Bibby et al., 2000). Each square was visited twice during the breeding season and one in winter. In some cases, a visit was split in two, covering two different (and successive) time periods (usually performed when the weather conditions were unstable). A record was made of the main environmental conditions predominant in the observation period: cloud cover, visibility (in percentage of occurrence) and temperature, rain and wind prevalence (in a qualitative scale). \n\nFieldwork took place between sunrise and sunset, excluding the hottest hours of the day due to the reduced activity of most bird species (e.g., Robbins, 1981).
