A total of 65 samples containing ostracods were collected from 15 natural caves, one mine, and one aquifer across mainland Italy and Sicily. Identifications were based on original descriptions and recent reviews of the relevant taxonomic groups. Georeferenced data were checked by plotting coordinates on a map.","methodSteps":["Ostracod specimens were dissected in glycerine, and soft parts were mounted on sealed slides, while valves were stored dry on micropaleontological slides. Both valves and soft parts were examined for identification to the species level whenever feasible, particularly in adults or late-stage individuals when present in numbers sufficient for detailed taxonomic analysis. Severely damaged specimens and early larval stages were classified as unidentified ostracods.
