The objectives of this study, the Littoral Investigation of Sediment Properties (LISP), was to examine parameters that might influence the stability of the sediment surface and to monitor atmospheric and oceanographic conditions continuously during a spring-neap tidal cycle. The final project report (Daborn 1991) contains information on bathymetry, sedimentology, (grain size, organic content, suspended particulate matter), oceanography (tides, circulation patterns, temperature and salinity), geomechanics, erodibility, air-sea-land interactions, primary production, and animal-sediment interactions.

This resource contains information on fish presented in the final project report in Section 3.11.7: 'Fish Utilization of the Tidal Flat'.

NOTE: This resource is a small subset of the data and information presented in the final project report.
","language":"eng","citation":{"text":"Daborn G (2017). At this location a floating barge was moored to act as a platform for water column studies, and as a base of operation for activities on surrounding parts of the flat during periods of exposure. At high water the barge floated on approximately 6m of water and was grounded for about 7 hours during each tidal cycle. The barge was monitored 24 hours a day from 1100h on 16 July to 1400 h on August 2, 1989.\nAccess to the site on foot was possible at low tide from the Starrs Point headland and at high water the study site could be reached by small boat from the Wolfville Harbour.\n\nIt was recognized that fish in the area would have an impact on the deposited sediments in the study area. A fish trap was erected in a tidal channel northeast of the Barge to monitor fish fauna visiting that area of the tidal flat. The trap was used to survey and collect fish on 9 occasions between 7 July and 4 August. On July 22, July 24 and August 3-4 both nighttime and daytime ebb tides were sampled.","sampling":"A fish trap was erected in a tidal channel northeast of the Barge to monitor the fish fauna visiting that area of the tidal flat. As described in the report (Daborn 1991), the fish trap consisted of a 1m x 1.3m 1.3m 'rebar' frame covered with a smelt net having 1cm mesh. Wings of the same mesh were constructed on either side of the trap, up the sides of the channel, in order to funnel fish through the trap. During sampling a collecting bag was attached to capture fish as they attempted to leave the flat during the next ebbb tide. Subsamples of the 4 most abundant fish species were collected for gut content analysis. This information is not contained in this resource but included in the project report.","qualityControl":"Scientific names associated with resource occurrence records have been mapped to recognized standards - marine taxa have been mapped to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS).
