Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia), and Mexico","designDescription":"The project is mobilizing biodiversity data generated by partner institutions across the distribution range of the American manatee, Amazonian manatees, hybrids, and Trichechus sp.. These data comprise multiple independent datasets that have been collected over several decades using a wide variety of monitoring and research approaches.\n\nThe datasets include records obtained from opportunistic sightings, dedicated surveys, stranding monitoring programs, telemetry studies, biological collections, tissue and other biological samples, rehabilitation and rescue records, and habitat monitoring. Dedicated surveys have been conducted using boats, aircraft, shore-based observations, and emerging technologies such as side-scan sonar. Additional datasets include sampling-event data from systematic monitoring programs where survey effort was recorded.\n\nBecause these datasets were originally collected by different institutions for different research and conservation purposes, they vary in structure, format, taxonomic scope, spatial precision, and metadata completeness. The project will harmonize these datasets by applying Darwin Core standards, implementing data quality control procedures, validating taxonomy and geographic information, and publishing the standardized datasets through GBIF.\n\nThe project also includes capacity-building activities to strengthen partners' ability to manage, standardize, publish, and reuse biodiversity data. Workshops, webinars, and technical guidance will support participating institutions in adopting international biodiversity data standards and establishing sustainable data management practices.\n\nBy integrating heterogeneous datasets into standardized, openly accessible biodiversity resources, the project will substantially improve the availability of information for research, conservation planning, environmental impact assessments, extinction risk assessments, and evidence-based decision-making throughout the species' range.","relatedProjects":[],"abstract":"Although regionally recognized as Vulnerable, the American manatee (Trichechus manatus) is currently severely underrepresented in GBIF occurrence records. This lack of accessible data limits its inclusion in national action plans and weakens regional conservation planning for marine mammals in South America. The need for manatee data was identified during coordinated data-mapping efforts in 2023, led by Dr. Carol Meirelles through the Alliance for Manatees. These efforts revealed large data gaps despite the existence of records from universities, NGOs and government agencies.\n\nThis project standardizes and publishes legacy datasets compiled from 19 institutions and integrates new data collected across 2024 and 2025. The delivery of a regional workshop in Suriname, where manatee data is critically lacking, provides essential training for participants in data mobilization. Training associated with this project covers Darwin Core formatting, metadata preparation and publishing to GBIF. It will be delivered in partnership with GBIF Brazil (SiBBr), ensuring hands-on guidance from data experts. The project also produces a multilingual technical guide based on case studies, enabling replication and long-term sustainability of best practices.\n\nBy bridging knowledge gaps, promoting open-access data sharing and fostering regional collaboration, the project delivers long-term benefits for biodiversity. It provides an essential data foundation for conservation prioritization, supports environmental decision-making and ensures that aquatic mammals are integrated into national biodiversity strategies."},"samplingDescription":{"studyExtent":"Coastal and estuarine waters of the states of Piauí, Ceará, and Rio Grande do Norte, Northeastern Brazil","sampling":"American manatee sightings recorded by Aquasis' team during fieldwork in Brazil, while monitoring release animals, close to the floating acclimatization pen in Peroba Beach, Icapuí, Ceará, and also from land-based platforms.
