Stations 1 to 4 were sampled from October 14, 1969 to June 23, 1970, at which time station 2 was dropped and station 5 added. This was done because of the similarity in the samples taken at stations 2 and 3. Station 2 was again sampled from February 1, 1970 to June 29, 1970. Stations 6 and 7 were sampled from February 18, 1971 to June 29, 1971.\nFor information on the sampling area Bedford Basin, see Krauel 1969 and Platt and Irwin 1970.","sampling":"The following information is from the data report (Sameoto 1971a)\n\nSample collection\nThree types of sampling gear were used:Icelandic sampler; Ring net 0.75 o/c; Ring net 0.5m o/c\n\nHorizontal samples were taken with a modified version of the Icelandic highspeed sampler (Sameoto, 1971b) from October 14, 1969 to January 7, 1970. Sampling was done at 4 knots along transects 1000m long at Stations 1 to 4. The sampler had a mouth diameter of 15cm and a mouth to filtering area ratio of 1:60. The mesh of the sampler was 308u Nitex nylon monofilament cloth. Samples were taken simultaneously at depths of 2, 20 40m on stations 2 and 3 from October 14 to June 7, 1970. After June, samples were at depths of 2, 20, 35 and 50m on station 3. \nThe position of the stations and the length of the tows on the transects were determined by radar.\n\nOblique samples from the bottom to the surface were taken on all stations with a metered #6 (233u mesh) 3/4 m ring net and a #20 (76u) 1/2 m ring net. The nets were hauled at a speed of 1 m per second.\n\nAll sampling was done after dark.\n\nTreatment of Samples\nThe samples were analysed within one week of collection.\nSagitta elegans greater than 5 rom length were removed, counted and weighed after blotting on filter paper. Ctenophores and medusae were counted and their volumes determined in a graduated cylinder. Euphausiids, cumaceans and fish larvae were removed, identified and weighed. The remaining sample consisting mainly of copepods and S. elegans less than 5 cm in length, was split a number of times depending on the size\nof the sample. Adult and 4th copepodite stages of copepods, small and eggs of S. elegans were counted and identified in one of the split portions of the sample. Free water was removed from the entire sample of copepods and other small forms of zooplankton (from here on referred to as 'zooplankton') by\nvacuuming over a 30~ filter until water ceased to tip from the funnel. The zooplankton was then weighed to obtain a biomass estimate.\nThe S. elegans were arbitrarily divided into 2 groups, animals 5 cm long and less and animals over 5 cm in length. Five cm was chosen because this was the length at which the animals could be easily removed from the samples.","qualityControl":"Scientific names associated with BioChem collections have been mapped to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS).
