The study compared bird species richness and density, bird abundance, and species composition across 5 land use strata: oil palm plantations, teak plantations, jhum, rainforest edge, and rainforest interior. The study was carried out in 2014 at sites near villages in the buffer zone and interior sites in the core zone of DTR, as part of an effort that included resurvey of transects to study recovery of forests and birds after shifting cultivation."},"samplingDescription":{"studyExtent":"The data contains detections of mammals made along line transect surveys carried out primarily for bird surveys and habitat assessment in the Dampa Tiger Reserve landscape, Mizoram, northeast India. Further details of the Study Area and methods are available in Mandal and Raman (2016), but methods are briefly described below. Twenty replicate 100-m long-line transects were surveyed in each of 5 study strata: oil palm plantations, teak plantations, jhum (shifting agriculture), rainforest edge, and rainforest interior, giving a total of 100 transects each surveyed once. Bird surveys were carried out between March 14 and April 14, 2014. Two observers walked each 100-m transect in 10 min, noting all birds and mammals seen, heard, or flying under the canopy. Mammals detected along these transects were also recorded.","sampling":"Two observers (most often T. R. S. Raman as primary observer, followed by J. Mandal) walked slowly to complete each 100-m transect in 10 min, noting all birds seen, heard, or flying under the canopy (or less than 5 m above the canopy). All birds and mammals detected within 30 m on either side of the transect line were recorded. Bird surveys along transects were carried out on foot during early morning hours (05:30-08:30), when bird activity was highest, mostly on clear or partly cloudy days. Mammal detections along these transects form the basis of this dataset. Further details in Mandal and Raman (2016).","qualityControl":"Raw data were screened for gaps (filled with NA where applicable), and verbatim identification was matched to correct scientific name of the taxon in worksheets. Geographic location was chosen as the approximate midpoint of line transects (based on known start and end points and description of route) with a coordinate uncertainty in metres assigned to it. Individual counts were based on number counted in the field (as recorded, in the case of sightings). Notes and other details were concatenated into occurrenceRemarks field.","methodSteps":["Methods are as described in Mandal and Raman (2016)."]},"countryCoverage":[],"collections":[],"dataDescriptions":[{"name":"Data from: Shifting agriculture supports more tropical forest birds than oil palm or teak plantations in Mizoram, northeast India","charset":"UTF-8","url":"https://doi.org/10.1650/CONDOR-15-163.1","format":"Comma delimited text files (CSV)"}],"dataLanguage":"eng","purpose":"The main purpose was to survey bird communities; mammals were recorded alongside bird data.","acknowledgements":"<p>Financial support for travel and logistics was provided by the Mizoram Forest Department; other costs were covered by the Nature Conservation Foundation. We thank the Mizoram Forest Department, particularly Lalthanhlua ‘Tlana’ Zathang, Field Director, Dampa Tiger Reserve, and Liandawla, Chief Wildlife Warden, for inviting us to carry out the Dampa bird survey and providing necessary permits and support.
