Amphibians include salamanders, newts and frogs, while reptiles include turtles, snakes, lizards, amphisbaenians and crocodilians. Most records are identified to species or genus level, with some identified only to family, suborder or order level. The collection includes three specimens of nomenclatural significance. First, it contains a type specimen of the matamata turtle, Chelus fimbriata (Schneider, 1783), catalog number ZOO.0000088. Originally collected by the Portuguese naturalist Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira during his travels in Brazilian Amazonia in the late 18th century, this specimen was designated and described by Ceríaco and Bauer (2017). Second, the collection includes a paratype of Gastrotheca griswoldi (Shreve, 1941), catalog number ZOO.0012744, donated by Arthur Loveridge and recorded in March 1939. Third, a topotype (a specimen collected from the type locality after the original description) of the fossil turtle Rosasia soutoi (Carrington da Costa, 1940), catalog number MIN.003873, is also present in the collection. The dataset supports research in herpetology, taxonomy, systematics, biogeography, biodiversity history and natural history The scope includes the entire herpetological collection regardless of taxonomic resolution, from species-level identifications to specimens identifiable only at higher ranks, ensuring a complete representation of the museum's holdings. The collection spans more than 100 years, with most specimens collected in the late 19th and early-to-mid 20th centuries. The geographic scope is global, with strongest representation from Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia, reflecting Portugal's historical and scientific connections.","sampling":"The collection was assembled over more than a century through donations, institutional transfers and the acquisition of material for teaching and research. Documented individual contributors include Bedriaga, Luiz de Carvalho, António Figueiredo Gomes e Sousa and Paulino de Oliveira. Institutional material was received from organizations including schools in Coimbra, the Museu de Lisboa, the Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas and administrative authorities associated with Macau and Timor-Leste. The collection comprises preserved herpetological material, including fluid-preserved specimens, taxidermy mounts and skeletal preparations, as well as fossil material such as a Cretaceous turtle specimen (catalog number MIN.003873).","qualityControl":"Data quality was ensured through a multi-layered verification process addressing taxonomic accuracy, provenance and georeferencing precision. After physical inventory, transcribed label data were cross-referenced against the museum's historical accession registers and a preliminary digital inventory to resolve discrepancies, identify previously uncatalogued specimens and establish a verifiable chain of custody for each object.","methodSteps":["A systematic digitization of the herpetological collection began in 2012 and was updated in 2025. The collection was catalogued in Microsoft Excel and mapped to Darwin Core standards for GBIF publication. A complete shelf survey was conducted to locate all reptile and amphibian specimens. For each specimen, all associated information from labels, annotations, and jar inscriptions were transcribed. Curatorial checks included verification against historical accession registers and assignment of new unique catalog numbers. Historical numbers, when present, were retained in a separate data field to preserve provenance.","Taxonomic quality control followed a hierarchical verification protocol. Existing identifications on labels and in historical catalogs were treated as provisional and validated against primary nomenclatural authorities. Amphibians were checked against AmphibiaWeb and Amphibian Species of the World (Frost 2025), while reptiles against The Reptile Database. For taxa from specific geographic regions or belonging to taxonomically challenging groups, identifications were further validated through specialized literature. European specimens were verified using the checklist of Italian amphibians (Capula et al. 2005) and European Amphibians and Reptiles (Mertens and Wermuth 1960), the latter being used for validating the historical taxon \"Lacerta muralis var. caerulea\" from Capri, Italy. Specimens from Timor-Leste were assessed against a survey of the region's herpetofauna (Kaiser et al. 2011). African material, particularly from Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe, was revised with reference to recent systematic works on the genus Boaedon (Hallermann et al. 2020, Ceríaco et al. 2021). South American specimens with historical provenance were evaluated against a contemporary revision of Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira's expeditionary collections (Ceríaco et al. 2025). For morphologically challenging groups where diagnostic features are often obscured in preserved material, dedicated identification guides were used, including those for monitor lizards of the genus Varanus (Auliya and Koch 2020) and for crocodilian species (Environment Canada 1995). Additionally, specific identifications of reptile specimens were provided by Mariana Marques on 6 July 2021, refining the taxonomic assignment of these taxa.","Georeferencing followed two reproducible workflows depending on locality precision. For specimens with precise locality descriptions, an automated pipeline using Python and the GeoPandas was developed to derive coordinates and uncertainty estimates. This pipeline downloads administrative polygons from the GeoBoundaries database, reads local IUCN Red List range shapefiles where applicable, computes polygon intersections between administrative boundaries and known species distributions, and derives intersection centroids with associated radial uncertainty. When automation was not possible or locality data were ambiguous, manual georeferencing was conducted with GeoNames geographical database and GEOLocate web application, with uncertainty estimated from spatial extent. For specimens labelled only as \"Índia Portuguesa\" (Portuguese India, pre-1961), a historical political-unit approach was used based on a georeferenced map in QGIS map of Portuguese colonial administration in the Indian subcontinent (Dörrbecker 2015). Polygons representing continental territories administered by Portugal during the 19th century and plausibly sampled during that period were retained, while archipelagos and short-lived colonial possessions were excluded. A single representative coordinate was computed as the mean centroid of the retained polygons, and spatial uncertainty was calculated using the point-radius method as the maximum geodesic distance from that centroid to the furthest polygon vertex, expressed in meters. All coordinates are presented in decimal degrees with WGS84 datum, and the original verbatim locality \"Índia Portuguesa\" is preserved alongside the georeferenced coordinates."]},"countryCoverage":[],"collections":[],"dataDescriptions":[],"dataLanguage":"eng","purpose":"To make the collection accessible to the scientific community.","acknowledgements":"The authors thank Gabriela Hirata (Instituto de Ciências Biológicas, Museu de Biologia, Universidade de Brasília, Brazil) for assistance with the identification of selected specimens, and João Santos (Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal) for support in developing the automated georeferencing pipeline.","pubDate":"2026-10-09T00:00:00.000+00:00","maintenanceUpdateFrequency":"UNKNOWN","maintenanceDescription":"","license":"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/legalcode","dwca":{"coreType":"http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/Occurrence","extensions":[],"modified":"2026-10-09T08:22:06.831+00:00"},"approximateCounts":{"occurrenceCount":585}}
